I walked in to Alpha Athletics just over a year ago with no expectations. I am in my early 40’s. I haven’t really participated in any organized sports since college. I exercised periodically at home, but I realized I needed a jump-start to get in better shape and take control of my health.
A friend of mine mentioned I should try CrossFit, but I was skeptical. I thought to myself that group fitness isn’t really my thing. How was I going to be able to lift all those weights and keep up with people much younger than me? After going back and forth for a while, I decided to reach out to Tony and give it a try. I couldn’t be happier that I took this first step. Tony and all the coaches at Alpha couldn’t have been more welcoming and encouraging. They prepare you for all the basic movements through their Fundamentals course. Once you are in to the daily WODs, everything is scaled to your fitness level.
In the past year, I have dropped 15 pounds and more than doubled, sometimes tripled, the amount of weight I can lift. It is more than moving weights, though. Rest assured, you will get a full body workout.
I have to admit that group fitness is now my thing. The WODs can and will kick your ass, but you get through it as a team. You will make friends, commiserate and have loads of fun while working your ass off.
The amount of self-confidence, sense of pride and accomplishment that I have gained over the last year is unlike anything I have ever experienced. I can’t thank the staff and members enough for that.
I guarantee that if you keep coming back regularly like I do, you will get the same results.
I never thought I could do this before I got in there and did it. I’ve not ever really been a “gym person.” I was overweight and out of shape when I first started here 6 months ago. And, while I am far from reaching my ultimate goals yet, I can tell anyone who is thinking of looking into going to this gym: do not be afraid.
The coaches take really good care of you. Your workouts are scaled so you can find success. They take pride in helping people meet their individual goals. It will be a long while before I can be even half as strong, fast and “good” as many of the other participants, but the coaches help me keep my focus on making me better than I was yesterday, not on competing with someone else’s standards.
If you want to start working out but aren’t sure if you can, Tony and his staff will help you discover that you can, indeed. If you’re already in great shape, that’s cool, too. You’ll still find awesome challenges here.
I couldn’t be happier with my decision to join this gym, and I wanted to share a review in the hopes that other people who were maybe once like me — apprehensive, nervous, out-of-practice — would feel assured that they’d be welcomed here.
I’ve learned the immense power of taking things one step at a time. Where I used to get overwhelmed at thinking about trying to lift 100 pounds over and over, I have been guided to see the power of linking one accomplishment after another instead.
If you’re considering joining this gym, you should certainly give it a try. You really cannot possibly be sorry you did.
Alpha is the best CF box I’ve been to and been a part of. The members have formed a very warm, welcoming community. They will introduce themselves to you and make you feel welcome, whether you’re new to the gym or just popping in for a visit.
The coaches are sure to explain movement standards and their expectations in regards to weight and pace, so you aren’t left feeling unsure of how to do something or confused by the lingo. The coaches also make it a point to watch you and your movement patterns, which makes it feel like you have hired a personal trainer every time you go. They know how to motivate their members so that they want to push hard while they’re there and still show up the next day.
If you commit to going consistently, you will get better. I love this place. It’s definitely the best hour of my day.
My wife and I started into CrossFit with Alpha Athletics a little less than a year ago. Neither one of us had any experience with it, nor really much experience in any kind of gym setting. We checked out a few gyms in the area and couldn’t help but feel a little intimidated walking into them for the first time. However, Alpha was much different. Tony made us feel very welcomed right off the bat. Him, April, the other coaches, and the rest of the members really make it a point get to know all of the new faces that come into the gym. He wasted no time getting us up to speed in the fundamentals class, working with us one-on-one to show us all of the basic movements and how we can scale them for our skill/strength level. Tony is not only extremely knowledgeable, but also does an excellent job at breaking things down and explaining them in a way to not make you feel overwhelmed. My wife and I walked into Alpha for the first time feeling out of shape and over weight. Within the first few weeks, we really started to notice a difference in our health. And now, almost a year later, we are in the best shape of our lives, nearly doubling or tripling some of our strengths! I used to hate going to the gym and working out, but now it’s become something that we love and look forward to everyday. Not to mention the results and skills that we’ve gained over the last few months. I can sincerely attribute all of that to the friendly atmosphere at Alpha, the knowledgeable coaches, and the support we got from the other members. It’s with sadness that we had to leave Alpha due to a relocation. Tony and April have really built a quality gym for everyday people. They make it a point to make sure everyone gets the attention they need and they take the work very seriously. But they also know how to have fun and coordinate social events outside of the gym. They really do have a one-of-a-kind gym there and we feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to get started into CrossFit at Alpha Athletics. We would certainly recommend it to anyone at any skill level looking to get in shape, become more active, and just have fun!
