It Certainly the Uncertainty

Is there anything scarier than uncertainty?  I’m willing to bet the vast majority of things, people, events, etc. that you fear is rooted in not knowing.   Not knowing how somebody or some thing will respond leads many of us to at best not proceed and at worst completely avoid.  Don’t know if that girl is feeling your vibe?  Well you should definitely just mind my business and never ask her and instead create a lot of crazy scenario’s in your head about why you’re right.  Works every time.

As a small business owner trying to navigate a global pandemic (definitely not part of my original business plan) me and uncertainty have become best buds.  Don’t get me wrong I’ve been the recipient of unbelievable support these last few months.  I’ve had clients keep active memberships, help from family so I can work on my business and the best partner in the world (that’s April for those keeping track at home).  Even so the uncertainty is what keeps me up at night.

Famous stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius held the belief that you do not have control over events you only have control on how you respond to them.  That events by nature were neutral and our perception cast them in a positive or negative light.  It explains how a similar event can trigger very different responses from different people.  In my experience a big factor in how a person perceives an event is directly related to how much control they feel they have.

In times of uncertainty your best tool is action.  The simple act of doing provides a small bit of control over this really big, chaotic world.  There is a calming effect to knowing that you are driving as opposed to being along for the ride.  Regardless of outcome at least you went down swinging. So the next time you’re feeling the fear of uncertainty overcome you do something.  Make a choice, take a stand, extend yourself but most importantly act.  Action is what separates high achievers from regular folk and if we’re being honest who wants to be regular.
